The floor is made of lava
Materials You Need: Anything to safely step on - such as cushions, rugs or steppingstones.
What You Can Do Together: In this activity, kids move around areas pretending that the floor is made of lava. The aim of the game? Don’t fall in! If a player does step on the ground (into the lava), they have to wait for another player to rescue them.
Ask the kids to choose which areas keep them ‘safe’ from the lava floor. If playing indoors, they might choose some cushions, a rug and blankets. Or if playing outdoors, they might choose a pathway, steppingstones or play equipment.
Encourage the children to use their imagination and think up lots of detail as they play. Are they standing on islands? Where is the lava coming from? Is the lava moving quickly? What kinds of things can they see? Is there a lava monster, maybe...?!
Set a start and end point to the game. Can the players make it from 'A' to 'B' without touching the floor?
What Your Child is Learning: Lots of children play this game instinctively without even being taught! It combines the perfect mix of adventure, imagination and problem‐solving.
