How to soothe a crying baby

To soothe a crying baby, check if he/she is hungry, tired, uncomfortable or sick. Don't expect to be able to recognize your baby's needs at any time, this is something you learn day by day.

Baby soothing tips:

  • Check if the baby needs to have his/her diapers changed, if he/she is too hot or too cold.
  • Offer your baby to suckle if you think he/she is hungry or more than two hours have passed since the previous meal (the same recommendation applies for artificially-fed babies).
  • Offer to breastfeed even if the baby is not hungry, because sometimes he/she needs to suckle. You can also offer a pacifier, but avoid them during the first month of life.
  • Talk to your baby gently, sing or play soothing music. Sometimes a child just needs to know that you are there and your voice can calm him/her down.
  • The person calming the baby should be alone with him/her in the room, calm and patient. In case of persistent crying (infantile colic), take turns with other family members.
  • Some noise sources (so-called white noise) such as a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner can calm the baby.
  • Gently rock or carry the baby in a carrier or scarf. Sometimes the parents' movement and closeness can calm the baby.
  • A walk with a stroller can also calm the baby. It is not recommended to leave the baby to sleep in the stroller unattended
  • Massage can soothe your baby and relax you. The massage also strengthens the bond with the baby.
