Contraindications to vaccination

Contraindications for vaccination are certain conditions and diseases of children and adults, during which they must not receive a certain vaccine, due to the risk of possible serious side effects. Therefore, it is important that the doctor gets acquainted with personal and family history before each vaccination, and examine the child.

Contraindications can be general and special, and temporary and permanent in duration.

  • General contraindications for all types of vaccines are:
    • acute illness
    • febrile illness
    • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or to one of the components of the vaccine
    • serious adverse reaction to a previous dose of vaccine
    • mild upper respiratory illness is not a contraindication for vaccination.
  • For the use of live vaccines, additional contraindications are:
    • conditions of weekend immune system  (congenital or acquired immunodeficiency : malignant diseases, treatment with chemotherapy, HIV infection, high doses of corticosteroids, radiation and other significant conditions of immunosuppression)
    • pregnancy
    • for whooping cough: Progressive diseases of the central nervous system (uncontrolled epilepsy, encephalopathy - progressive brain damage)
  • Temporary contraindication: acute illness and fever. However, mild upper respiratory illness is not a contraindication for vaccination.
