Making Numbers Interesting

Materials You Need:  None

What You Can Do Together: Slowly count out loud while making eye contact with the child. This way you will be able to monitor his/her reactions, follow their interest, help her/him when needed, and encourage your child to direct her/his attention towards you. Support and encourage your child to count on their own if they are old enough to do so. Do this by singing simple songs that have numbers and counting in them.

Do this activity with your child often. Count pebbles on your walk, count leaves on a branch, count steps from one house to another or the number of windows in your bedroom.

You can do this activity every day during free play or during daily routines- dressing, preparing meals, shopping or while walking.

What Your Child is Learning:  Numbers are all around us! Teaching your child to enjoy them is one way to develop their mathematical skills.
