Neglect of children

Neglect is when a parent or caregiver fails to meet a child's needs to an extent that significantly affects the child's physical and mental development. Neglect is not always intentional and the boundary when it starts is not always completely clear.

Certain situations should be repeated several times, in order to confirm the suspicion of neglect. Neglect is divided into physical, emotional, medical and educational.

Signs that may indicate some kind of neglect:

  • The child is constantly dirty and an unpleasant odor spread around him.

  • The child is constantly dressed in clothes or shoes that are inappropriate (weather conditions or size).

  • Frequent presence of conditions that indicate neglect of the child's personal hygiene (e.g. scabies or lice).

  • Presence of decayed teeth, obesity, malnutrition.

  • The child does not progress in growth and development because he is deprived of adequate nutrition.

  • Parents or guardians have access, but do not take the child for check-ups with a doctor/pediatrician.

  • Parents or guardians reject relevant child health promotion programs that include immunization, developmental monitoring, and the like.

  • Failure to provide adequate supervision in relation to the age and characteristics of the child.

  • The child is cared for by a person who is not capable of it (for health, material or other reasons).

  • Animal bites in a child that may indicate that the child is not being cared for while in contact with the animal.

  • Injuries that occurred as a result of inadequate supervision (burns, intake of harmful substances).

  • A parent or guardian does not seek medical advice, and the child has signs of illness or pain.

  • The environment in which the child is raised has poor hygiene standards that endanger the child's health (moisture, fungus on the walls, cold in the apartment / house, no electricity, water, there is a risk of fire).

  • The living environment is inadequate for the child's developmental level.

  • Lack of help and support during schooling.

  • Unjustified absence from school.

  • Insufficient provision of care, attention and love.

  • Statements of the child that he feels lonely, abandoned, unloved.
