Pregnant women and COVID-19 infection
Asymptomatic transmission of COVID-19 is possible in pregnant women, as well as in the general population. All pregnant women with an epidemiological contact history must be carefully monitored. If the infection is proven, the treatment of the pregnant woman depends on the clinical picture presented.
To date, there are limited data on the clinical presentation and perinatal outcomes after COVID-19 infection during pregnancy.
For now, there is no evidence of mother-to-child virus transmission when the infection manifests in the third trimester of pregnancy. PCR tests performed on amniotic fluid sample, umbilical cord blood, vaginal secretions, neonatal throat swabs and breastmilk were negative.
Evidence of severe outcomes for the mother or newborn after COVID-19 infection in the third trimester is inconclusive, as some of the cases had associated problems (premature rupture of fetal membranes, suffocation of the newborn, preterm birth...) that otherwise lead to a worse outcome.
