Pass the Imaginary Object
Materials You Need: none
What You Can Do Together: Ask the children to sit in a circle. Then, pretend to pick up an object and hold it for a while in your hands (to demonstrate what the object might be and how to play the game). You can choose anything – a tennis ball, a teapot, a pineapple, a hairbrush or a cat, etc.
Tell the children what your imaginary object is before passing it to the first player. They should then hold the object accordingly for 20 seconds or so, before handing it to the person next to them.
Get each player to give the object a new description, such as ‘it’s really heavy’, ‘it’s hot’ or ‘it’s spiky’. As they passed it on, the next player must then act out that description.
Choose a wide range of imaginary objects – from a heavy rock to a fluttering butterfly – to really stretch the children’s imagination as they pretend to hold each one.
What Your Child is Learning: This activity allows children to explore their imagination and develop their vocabulary. A quick and fun game that can be played anywhere, it also helps to build teamwork skills and confidence.
