Playing with the Voice

Materials You Need:  None

What You Can Do Together: Before starting this activity, prepare a quiet room or space with little distractions.

Sit on a rug or on the floor in front of your baby and tell them, “Let’s play with our voices!” Start by making sounds with your voice, pretending to be an older adult. You can add some gestures as well to capture your child’s attention. Then, lower the pitch of your voice to produce a deep sound. You can also sing in a high-pitched voice. Wait to see your little one's reaction and invite her/him to make sounds with their voice too.

When your little one responds with other sounds, you should respond with different sounds and by making gestures. This will allow you to conduct a "conversation" with your little one in which you can take turns “talking.”

You can do this activity when reading a book, imitating family members, or singing songs. Your little one can begin to imitate sounds with her/his voice.

What Your Child is Learning:  With this activity, your little one will have a fun time learning to take turns while talking, making different sounds with their voice and develop communication and social interaction skills.
