Possible side effects after BCG vaccine
Before leaving the maternity ward, your baby received a BCG vaccine containing live attenuated bacteria Bacillus Calmette Guerin (Mycobacterium bovis BCG) in the left upper arm in order to develop protection against tuberculosis.
Body
As with other immune-biological materials, side effects may occur with this vaccine.
Possible side effects are:
- Stronger local reaction with the formation of ulcers (ulcers) which last longer and leave a bigger scar.
- Stronger and prolonged reaction at the injection site and of the regional lymph glands, which become inflamed (BCG-itis) leaving an additional scar or the process ends under the skin, and due to the accumulated calcium can be palpable.
- Allergic reactions in the form of rash, hives, itching, anextremely rare anaphylactic reactions are also possible.
- Very rare reactions to the vaccine can include inflammation of the bones or joints.
There is no uniform recommendation regarding the treatment of BCG-itis. Mostly the process is just monitored and spontaneous healing occurs. Sometimes surgical drainage of the gland is done.
Distant reactions to vaccination are treated.
