Possible side effects after hepatitis B vaccine

The hepatitis B vaccine is given to children to protect them against hepatitis B
Body

In a small percentage of children, as with any other medicine, it can cause transient side effects such as:

  • locally: pain, redness and hardening
  • loss of appetite,
  • drowsiness,
  • irritability, insomnia
  • feeling tired
  • headache,
  • vomiting, diarrhea
  • slightly increased body temperature.

These reactions are mild and disappear spontaneously within a few days.

After vaccination, serious allergic reactions are extremely rare (less than 1 out of 10 000 recipients) in the form of: swelling of the face and neck, difficulty breathing, severe weakness with dizziness and loss of consciousness, blue skin discoloration, most often while a child is still in a pediatric clinic.

Tips:

If, after leaving the health institution, your child develops any of the listed allergic reactions, contact a pediatrician or emergency department immediately.

It is advisable to stay in the waiting room for another ten minutes after the vaccination in order to monitor the child's behavior.
