When it's time for the first pillow

It is known that babies do not use pillows; it is enough to put a cloth diaper or an empty pillow case under the baby's head. Many babies gag, so the role of this improvised pillow is actually just to protect the baby's bedding (sheets).

The first pillow

The first pillow can be used around the age of one. Here are some recommendations:

  • The pillow should be thin, to avoid an incorrect position of the spine.
  • The area of the pillow should be large enough to avoid the child's head slipping off the pillow when turning.
  • The pillow serves to fill the space between the shoulders and the head when the child sleeps on his/her side or to fill the space between the cervical spine, nape and back.
  • Pillows of medium thickness, from 10 to 15 centimeters, are recommended. Standards vary depending on the country; the standard in our country is pillow size of 50 × 80 centimeters.
  • In the period from the second to the fifth year, children grow and develop intensively; a slightly thicker pillow can then be used.
  • Children do not need anatomical pillows.
  • It is recommended to use pillows made of modern anti-allergy materials, to wash them occasionally and change them every year.
  • If the child does not want to use a pillow, finds it uncomfortable, removes it from under his/her head, there is no need to insist on using it.
