Yoga
Materials You Need: none
What You Can Do Together: Children don't need to join a class to practise yoga. They simply need an open space with a soft surface to stretch out their bodies.
There's no need to do anything complicated, either - just some simple stretches and poses will give children their first taste of yoga. This activity can also provide some relaxing, fun family time, too!
Children can practise at home, in the garden or even in the park. Start by getting them to try a few simple exercises such as:
- Balancing on one leg
- Touching their toes
- Standing up from lying down without using their hands
Next, why not familiarise yourself with some simple yoga poses for your children to try? Here are some popular poses for little ones:
- Tree Pose (lots of children will have already heard of this pose. It’s great for improving balance)
- Downward Facing Dog (another well‐known pose, helping to build strength)
- Seated Forward Fold (improves flexibility)
- Warrior Pose (builds strength and improves balance)
- Happy Baby Pose (great for stretching and flexibility)
- Lotus Pose (improves posture and flexibility)
- Butterfly Pose (simple but fun, this pose helps to develop posture and flexibility)
There's a kind of yoga called 'Doga'. This is when people practise yoga with their pet dogs!
What Your Child is Learning: Yoga is a great exercise for children, helping them to relax, focus, build confidence, develop core strength and flexibility, and improve posture. What's more, it's simple, fun and free!
