Tummy Time

Materials You Need: None

What You Can Do Together: This exercise can be done in the first few days of your baby’s birth.

Place your baby on your chest with their head facing you. If your baby puts their head on your chest at first, change her/his head from time to time to prevent her/his head from lying flat on one side for too long. Once your baby manages to hold her/his head up, you can lie down with her/him on the floor, encouraging her/him to use their elbows to raise their head. Provide gentle support for her/his abdomen and arms, so your baby is comfortable. You can place toys on the floor around her/him so he/she can see them.

At first, your baby may not like this position, but the duration for which they perform the action will increase upon completing the exercise regularly.

  • Tummy time primarily helps to develop:
  • Crawling Balance and coordination
  • Eye-hand coordination
  • Concentration Confidence and independence

What Your Child is Learning: This activity will help your child to develop strong abdominal muscles that will allow her/him to sit, stand, and eventually walk, control weight with only their legs and track objects with his/her eyes.
