What to do in case of heatstroke?
If you suspect that a child has heatstroke, call the emergency medical service (194) immediately or take him/her to hospital!
Body
While you are waiting for an ambulance, you need to:
Immediately get the child out of the sun
- Take the child to a shade or an air-conditioned room.
Remove excess clothing from the child
Cool the child by washing his/her face or splashing him/her with cold water
- If you are able, it is advisable to bathe or shower him/her with not too cold water!
- If water is not available, exposure to airflow (e.g. fan cooling) also helps.
If conscious, give the child chilled drinks
- If medical assistance has not arrived yet, call the emergency medical service (194) for further instructions.
After recovering from heatstroke, the child is sensitive to high temperatures during the following weeks. It is best to avoid high temperatures and physical activity until a pediatrician approves it.
