What does child abuse and neglect mean?
Abuse is most often thought of as severe beatings or sexual abuse. However, emotional abuse and neglect of children are more common, and their impact on children's mental health is equally harmful. Child abuse and neglect can be a single incident or a number of incidents that occur over time. Children are mostly abused by people who take care of them, and most often it is their parents. If the parents live separately, the child abuser may be the current partner of the parent caring for the child.
Abusers can be other people who take care of the child: the elderly, foster parents, as well as people who have professional responsibility for the child, power in relation to the child or people in whom the child has confidence (for example, educator, teacher, coach, etc.). Unknown persons who use information and communication technology to establish a relationship with a child for the purpose of abusing a child can also be abusers. Other children often appear as abusers.
