E-cigarettes - new tobacco products

E-cigarettes - a typical 21st-century product, a result of technology penetration into all pores of society. Their operation is based on heating a liquid (which usually contains nicotine) and creating a mixture of small particles that are released into the air.

The process of their use is called vaping (vape - evaporate), and the term juuling, after one of the most popular products (not yet present in our country), is also used.

For starters, the terminological confusion when it comes to new tobacco products needs to be clarified!

Specifically, for the past few years, a new generation of devices has been on the market - Tobacco Heating Products (THP), whose technology is based on heating tobacco, instead of combustion. Since these devices do not contain liquid as a nicotine medium, they are not officially classified as electronic cigarettes, with which they are usually equated. Due to the specific process of heating tobacco at high temperatures, they are called "smokeless", although they create a small amount of short-term visible vapor on exhalation.

Although manufacturers present these devices as a revolutionary combination of sophisticated technology and advanced science and advocate that they be declared modified-risk tobacco products (which was recently made official by the US Food and Drug Administration), the key point must not be forgotten:

Their basic ingredient is NICOTINE, which causes addiction, and this is already more than a clear health threat!

The position of the World Health Organization (WHO) is unequivocal - electronic cigarettes and other new devices are indisputably harmful, which requires strict regulation of their use. Because...

  • There is still no valid evidence that electronic and "smokeless" devices carry a lower health risk than traditional cigarettes, neither for smokers nor for passive smokers.
  • There is no evidence that these devices help to quit smoking. On the contrary, dual consumption of regular and electronic cigarettes is increasingly common.
  • There is a growing number of users of electronic nicotine devices among young people.

For starters - it is quite "trendy" to smoke a cigarette outside a café or restaurant, at any time of the year, instead of inside! While we wait for science to provide new evidence, the recommendation is - stay cautious! And there are other ways to follow modern world trends.
