A winter walk with a baby

Walks in cold weather are very useful for building and strengthening immunity; however, when it comes to babies, it is necessary to be careful.
Body

Do not take the baby out until he/she is one month old, then take him/her out for a short time around noon. If the baby is cold, he/she will cry, his/her hands will be ice-cold, and he/she may shiver. Don’t let that happen! If you notice these signs, you should take the child home immediately, warm him/her, breastfeed or give him/her a warm drink. Do not neglect the effect of cold wind! Strong wind makes the body lose heat faster, even when the thermometer does not show extremely low temperatures.

Important considerations for winter walks with the baby:

  • The stroller should have a cold-weather cover and a warm surface for the baby to lie on (a blanket will do).
  • The child should be dressed in layered cold-weather clothes. Take care to avoid overheating or sweating.
  • If the temperature is around zero, the baby's ears must be covered with a winter hat, hands with mittens, and the neck with a scarf.
  • When the wind blows, the baby's face can be wrapped in a scarf, but the nose must not be blocked.
  • Hats and cold-weather clothes should be made of tight-woven fiber (e.g. wool). Wool and similar materials provide good thermal insulation.
  • Avoid cotton clothes because they absorb water and stay wet.
  • The feet should be protected from the cold with a snowsuit or warm shoes even if the baby does not walk; cover the baby with a blanket in the stroller.
  • Keep in mind that the baby is wearing a snowsuit with a slippery surface, and you - a winter jacket, so handling the baby will be more difficult if he/she cries or you need to take him/her out of the stroller.

The baby should not be taken outside if the temperature is below -10 °C, in strong wind, rain, snow, fog.
